Clean water for Kenya – a solution that matters
The Making More Health (MMH) water purification project is an essential part of our ecosystem approach in Western Kenya to make more health happen. Of the 1.7 million people in Bungoma County, 90% live in rural areas with poor infrastructure and need to walk 1.5 km on average to access clean water sources. To improve drinking water quality on the ground, our partner HELIOZ offers a device called WADI (WAter DIsinfection). This solar-powered UV measurement tool visualizes the process of solar water disinfection (SODIS) in PET bottles.
Our local partners AMPATH and GAASPP organized the implementation of the project on the ground. They trained six target-groups from different areas in Bungoma and distributed 140 WADIs.
After three months, the first results are now visible: a total of 326 households have benefited from the project. Specifically, 4,018 people consumed water purified by WADI, which corresponds to approximately 18,270 liters. Besides, an enormous reduction of water-borne diseases could be observed. A great success!
Collaboration for more health
In the next step, further cooperations are to be created to drive the project forward. In partnership with the government, water towers will be built to store clean drinking water. Also, individual communities will learn more about health and hygiene in separate training sessions. A fully equipped, on-site laboratory is also planned to consistently check the water quality.
At MMH, we would like to thank all participants for their dedicated engagement in this webinar and the detailed updates from our speakers. Stay tuned for further updates!
